Jennifer Cramblett and her partner, Amanda Zinkon decided that are ready to become parents. In late 2011 Jennifer decided to get pregnant and what is even more interesting, she chose in-vitro fertilization method. They went to sperm bank in Ohio, USA with intention to find suitable donor for their baby. These two women chose a man with blue eyes and blonde hair just like Amanda does, and hoped that their baby might get such traits.
After they made the choice, Jennifer underwent in vitro fertilization by a doctor who had used the sample that they have chosen from the sperm bank. Luckily everything was smoothly and the dream of the two women was true. Now they were one step closer to have real family.
After 9 interesting months, Jennifer went into labor and was quickly delivered to hospital. There she got the greatest shock in her life. Namely, when she gave birth she was incredibly surprised: her baby didn’t look even nearly as they expected. Their baby had black skin and the couple was truly shocked!
They wanted to know: How could this happen? After a while they found out that the sperm bank had accidentally mixed up the white donor that the couple demanded. The staff had misread the number 380 and exchanged it with number 330, who was African-American.
At first Jennifer was brokenhearted and she had to fight with her feelings of anger, disappointment and fear as now she had to raise black child. Namely, she grew up in a town where there were no people with black skin. It is quite confusing as her first interaction with that kind of a person was when she went to university. Jennifer had no idea about their culture and she wasn’t ready for a mixed-race parenting. She admitted that she was afraid that her conservative family would not accept her black daughter.
It is fact that the sperm bank really did huge and horrible mistake. This is mistake that certainly will change someone’s life, as is Jennifer’s case.
Jennifer decided to sue the sperm bank because of negligence and fraud. The trial should be finished later this year.
This couple had to make some extraordinary changes and efforts just to make sure that their child has the best possible upbringing. For instance, they are driving miles to a hair salon that is specialized in cutting African-American hair and they seek for consultation from social workers and sociologists. Jennifer and Amanda truly are doing their best and are trying to raise their daughter as compassionate human being who will accept all people from all walks of life.
